Listed below are the awards available to Family Medicine residents. These awards are presented during Scholarship Day.
The Family Medicine Resident Scholarships recognize the leadership abilities of outstanding senior family medicine residents from each of the 17 Canadian family medicine residency programs.
The value of the Family Medicine Resident Scholarship is $5,000. The award may be presented during Family Medicine Forum (FMF). Each recipient will receive complimentary four-day registration for FMF. In addition, the Family Medicine Resident Scholarship may reimburse up to $2,000 per recipient to help offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.
Eligibility criteria:
Nominees must be family medicine residents in their second year at the time of nomination.
Nominees must show an interest in enhancing their leadership skills within organized medicine.
Nominees are eligible if they have an achievement in one or more the following areas:
- Leadership activities during residency/leadership qualities (beyond departmental and program activities, such as participation in organized family medicine, the CFPC’s Section of Residents, or Resident Doctors of Canada)
- Academic achievements related to family medicine (e.g., publications)
- Research achievements
- Oral presentation skills (articulate and confident when presenting to large groups)
- Unique achievements or exceptional activities in medical school or residency
- Service to vulnerable populations, such as rural, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, addiction/mental health, inner city, etc.

A university selection committee composed of residents (R1) and faculty representatives from each family medicine residency program will select their nominee for a Family Medicine Resident Scholarship. Only one nomination per university will be accepted.
The Honours and Awards Committee will approve the nominations for these awards and inform the recipients in August.
The Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship recognizes a top First Nations, Métis, or Inuit family medicine resident in Canada who has shown leadership and commitment to a career in family medicine.
The value of the Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship is $5,000. The award may be presented during Family Medicine Forum (FMF). The recipient will receive a complimentary four-day registration for FMF. In addition, the Indigenous Family Medicine Resident Scholarship may reimburse the recipient up to $2,000 to help offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

The joint College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) Honours and Awards Committee uses the peer endorsements from a national review process to compile their recommendations to be approved by the CFPC and FAFM Boards of Directors.
Nominees will be formally notified of results in August.
The Family Medicine Resident Awards for Scholarly Achievement recognize outstanding academic accomplishments by family medicine residents. These awards are intended to stimulate family medicine research and innovation in education. One recipient or team from each faculty of family medicine across Canada will be selected.

Family medicine residents in their first, second, or third year of training are eligible.
Nominees cannot have received this award in the past three years.

The chair, postgraduate directors, and research directors from each Canadian family medicine residency program are asked to identify the best scholarly work by a resident in their department, using the department’s own criteria. Their nominee will become their school’s recipient of a Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarly Achievement. Only one nomination per university will be accepted.
The Honours and Awards Committee will approve the nominations for these awards and inform the recipients in August.
This award recognizes family medicine residents in their first or second year of training for excellent research carried out and completed prior to June 1, 2023.
The Research Awards for Family Medicine Residents will be presented during the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2023. The recipients will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Research Awards for Family Medicine Residents may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.*
*Please note that while pandemic restrictions are imposed, we might defer this portion of the award.
Eligibility criteria:
Family medicine residents who have completed a research project in 2023 are eligible.
Residents in a third-year training program are not eligible.
Applicants cannot have received this award in the past three years.

The chair and research directors of each family medicine residency program will identify the most outstanding research project conducted by a resident or team of residents in their program in 2023 Only one nomination per university will be accepted.
The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)’s Section of Researchers will evaluate the nominations and recommend the recipients of these awards to the national Honours and Awards Committee. There are two awards available.
The recipients and research directors will be notified of the results formally in August.
The Residency PBLP Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding scholarly projects by FM Resident(s) around small group learning through research, quality improvement, and/or education program development.
Projects that align with the following goals of Residency Practice-Based Learning will be favoured:
- Embedding evidence-based educational principles
- Promoting peer small groups for lifelong learning
- Encouraging reflection on learning
Examples of projects include:
- The use of social media to augment small group learning
- Small-group approach to learning
- Creation of a tool to enhance Practice-Based Learning
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must be Family Medicine Residents currently enrolled in a Canadian Family Medicine Residency or Enhanced Skills training program.
Judging criteria
Projects will be judged based on the following criteria:
- Originality, innovation, and contribution to scholarship around small group learning
- The approach to the assessment of the project goals, including methods and results

The resident(s) whose work is selected as the winning project will each be offered a 1-year free membership* (after graduation) to The Practice-Based Learning Program and awarded one $500 cash prize (to be shared by project group members).
The next 2 top projects, the recipient(s) will each receive a 1-year free membership* to the Practice-Based Learning Program after graduation.
*Free Membership needs to be used within a year of graduation.

- Notification of results will take place by email in June 2026.
One award will be given per site. This is awarded to a first-year resident who has demonstrated interest and excellence in teaching. Recommendation for this award will come from site faculty members and the director at each site.
The award was created by Dr. Arthur and Judith Dodek in honour of Dr. Morton Dodek, a graduate of UBC's first medical class in 1954, who spent many years as a full-service family physician and exemplified commitment to family medicine. The award is offered to a resident who demonstrates care, competence, and compassion in their pursuit of providing care to underserved and vulnerable populations. The recipient will demonstrate this in one or more of the following ways:
- Sought out opportunities to provide care to underserved and vulnerable populations.
- Translated current knowledge on best practices providing other caregivers with guides to best practice.
- Mentors, encourages, and teaches others in providing care to these populations
- Develops new knowledge by reflection, assessment and/or research into the care of underserved and vulnerable populations.Contact: cindy.choi@ubc.ca
This award is offered in honour of Dr. John J. Zack who practiced full-service family practice including obstetrics and well-honored member of the CFPC. The recipient will be a second-year resident in the UBC residency program who demonstrates:
- Leadership in the form of advocacy and representation on behalf of patients, peers, or healthcare organizations.
- an interest in the CFPC by participating in events or organization either nationally or in the provincial chapter.
- a plan to practice full-service family medicine, including obstetrics, and has sought out experiences and designed their residency to maximize their ability to achieve this goal.
This award is funded by the Lloyd Jones Collins Foundation for outstanding Scholarship Project as chosen by Family Practice faculty. The Lloyd Jones Collins Foundation, under the directorship of Dr. Goertzen and four associates, granted its first annual Resident Research Awards in 1999 and continues to generously support family medicine residency research and faculty development.
Residents can apply for a research scholarship award that aims to assist in the publication of their scholarship papers. 6 Resident Scholarship Projects will be awarded for 2024.

The BCCFP 2023 Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding scholarly projects at each site and will be presented to the winning research projects during the site scholar day. The recipients will receive a $50 Gift Card and a commemorative glass plaque.
This research grant is unique in that it supports NEW researchers to complete a pilot project or research project in the domain of women’s (cis and trans inclusive) health. It is ideal for a first year resident beginning to plan for their scholar project. The grant amount is up to $2,500 for FP residents and $5,000 for a FP practitioner. Applicants with proposals returned for resubmission are offered mentoring through the Women's Health Research Institute to assist in preparing the full application. The knowledge translation grant awards funding to assist in the publication of a research project.
The Department of Family Practice Care of the Elderly s is offering two awards to second-year residents who demonstrate excellence in scholarly projects related to care of the elderly. The award is to support research and scholarship that contributes to geriatrics within the discipline of family practice. The award will be selected from among the final projects submitted by R2's in June.
Recipients of the Care of the Elderly Scholar Prize are expected to present their Scholar Project to the Care of the Elderly Committee within 12 months.
The Care of the Elderly Research Grant is available to UBC family medicine residents to support original research work and raise awareness and interest in the field of elder care. The funding is intended to support new family practice researchers to develop and carry out a research project. The grant will be awarded to projects that demonstrate excellence in research that contributes to geriatrics and elder care within the discipline of Family Medicine.
UBC residents conducting and presenting research as part of graduation requirements (i.e. Scholar project) are eligible and invited to apply. If the application is submitted by a research team of two or more residents, the grant will be awarded to support the research project as a whole.
The value of each Care of the Elderly Research Grant for a resident research project. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
