All UBC Family Practice R2 residents are expected to complete a rural rotation. For Kelowna Rural and Northern Rural a minimum of 8 blocks is spent in rural communities. For other residents, there is a minimum of 2 blocks, with the option for some interested residents to spend more time rurally (if interested, speak to your Site Director). We hope that you will welcome the rural experience from both an academic/medical, and a lifestyle/community perspective.
When you are on your rural rotation, you will be treated like a colleague – and we ask that you take this role seriously. This means communicating clearly and letting your rural practice know well in advance if you will not be starting on the first day of the rotation due to vacation, courses, exams or mandatory program activities. You also need to let them know when you will be absent during the rotation, again well in advance; this way they will not schedule patients/ ER coverage/ call for you during these times.
Treated as colleagues, you will be sharing responsibilities, knowledge, and physical space in the offices. A respectful approach will ensure the best experience for all involved.
Rural Communities
The details of who you will be working with and accommodation information can be found under ‘Rural Rotations’ in the Family Practice Postgraduate Entrada community. This is also where you can find the most up-to-date schedule of rural rotations. Changes that occur throughout the year will be reflected on this schedule.
Once the rural match is finalized, it is your responsibility to contact your preceptors well in advance of your Rural Rotation to confirm your start date and time. You may also wish to contact the administrator at the site to inquire about available accommodation.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Rural Education Manager: Larissa McLean
Rural Community Accommodation
Please review the individual rural site profiles on Entrada for accommodation information. Some sites have accommodation held or recommended for residents, and the main preceptor and clinic administrator often have more information about possible options.
The communities listed below have UBC leased rental units for 2024-25 which you may be assigned to stay in. You will be contacted in advance with notification of whether you are assigned to the leased unit, or if you need to source your own accommodation.
If you have questions, please contact larissa.mclean@ubc.ca or pgme.mandatedhousing@ubc.ca.
Please note, PGME housing does not permit pets per UBC policies.
