Resources

You will require a variety of assistance to complete your Resident Scholar Project. Below is a list of resources that you may find useful.

Research has its own challenges for some residents; however, for others, writing the proposal, ethics application and especially the report adds a whole new layer of complexity and stress. We understand this. If you know this about yourself in advance, or learn it quickly when trying to write your own proposal, etc., please find help before you get too frustrated! Here are some resources you might find useful.

UBC Writing Centre: http://learningcommons.ubc.ca/tutoring-studying/improve-your-writing/

Manuscript format for draft writing, final submission and awards application. Download PDF.

Purdue Online Writing Lab: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/01/

The University of Edinburgh: http://www.ed.ac.uk/institute-academic-development/postgraduate/doctoral/courses/online-courses/writing

Reference management software, like RefWorks and Zotero, helps you to collect, organize and manage your citations/references while you write referenced papers.

RefWorks: http://guides.library.ubc.ca/refworks

Zotero: http://guides.library.ubc.ca/library_research_commons/Zotero

You may apply for additional funds before project completion from a number of different agencies.   UBC also offers some cash awards for promising Scholar Projects.   Please click here for more information.

The Distributed Health Research Methods Course is an online course consisting of 13 modules of research topics. All residents will have access to this course so if you wish to learn more about specific research methods pertaining to your project, you are welcome to watch the videos and do the readings for the specific module in which you are interested. The site is currently hosted on Canvas.

All Projects involving humans (even you or your fellow residents!) must have Ethics Board approval BEFORE starting. This includes interviews, photos, video and simple surveys. Projects using clinical data from patient charts also need Ethics Board approval.  If you are not sure, ask your Site Scholar Faculty. Please see https://ethics.research.ubc.ca/behavioural-research-ethics/guidance-medical-residents-doing-behavioural-research for more information.

See this page for all information about BREB, QI/program evaluation checklist, and end of project ethics requirements.

End of Project Ethics Requirement

To meet the Research Ethics Board (REB) requirements for the 5-year data storage, UBC REB strongly recommends storing research data/information (convert paper documents to electronic) for the required 5-year period in MS Teams Onedrive at the following link  Research Data. A department administrator will delete the files after the 5-year requirement has passed. If you are uploading a file with participant identifiable information, please password protect it and ensure the research assistant has the password.

The research preceptor and the site research faculty serve a supervisory and mentorship role in the resident scholarship project. Residents’ scholarship project experience is greatly affected by the nature of this supervision.  By working closely and communicating effectively with their research preceptor and site research faculty residents will enhance the quality of their scholarship project and their educational experiences. The responsibilities of the faculty and preceptor can be found here.

Every resident is allowed to claim up to $200 in expenses from their Site. Working in groups therefore increases the total funding on a project. Legitimate expenses may include stationery and supplies or small gifts, draw prizes, or token compensation for subjects participating in your research. Expenses must be reasonable in the judgment of your Site administration or Site Faculty for Research and will not be refunded without receipts.

The repository is a way for current R1s looking for a Scholarship idea and PI to browse current active projects and connect with potential PIs. It is also a way for current R1s to advertise any potential ideas to connect with other R1s.

For R2s, if you are completing your project but have further work to do (for publication etc) and would like to advertise for a continuation of your project, this is a way for you to do so.

The link is research.familymed.ubc.ca/scholarship. Please contact your Site Faculty for Research for the password.

This is a step by step guide (with PI steps) for the Scholar Project. It includes general timelines for residents as well as responsibilities for your Primary Investigator. Click here to download the guide. A PI role clarification document can also be found here.

This is a key document for your scholarly project. Every resident needs to fill out a research proposal for submission to their site faculty prior to commencing their project. For projects requiring ethics this will also be submitted as part of your ethics proposal. Click here to download a Research Proposal Template.

The Department of Family Medicine has engaged Emmes Canada to provide statistical support for Resident Scholar projects. Emmes is a global Clinical Research Organization (CRO) that supports clinical trials and public health research projects. The Canadian office is based out of Vancouver and has a strong background in statistical design and analysis and they have collaborated with researchers across academia, government, and industry to produce high-quality research and publications.

Residents are encouraged to contact statconsult_ubc@emmes.com to schedule a 1-on-1 meeting with a statistician to determine the needs of their project.

For assistance in determining when you should see a statistician, click here.

The UBC Survey Tool is provided by Qualtrics. It is an easy-to-use, top-tier survey tool platform that offers a wide range of features. It complies with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) because the survey data is kept secure and is stored and backed up in Canada.

NOTE: If you use the UBC Survey Tool, your name will be available to other users of the tool. This feature is important to facilitate collaboration.

The UBC Survey Tool is available to all UBC faculty, staff, students, and sponsored guests with a valid CWL account. Users can login at https://ubc.qualtrics.com with their CWL account to access the tool immediately.
