PETER GRATHAM AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

This certificate is intended to recognize a teacher in Family Medicine, in UG or PG, who emulates Peter’s model of teaching, both as an excellent teacher and as one who encouraged others to excellence in teaching.  Recipients in recent years included:  Marjorie Docherty (2010), Janet McKeown (2011), Nardia Strydom (2012), Derek Poteryko (2013), Cameron Ross (2014), Kevin Shi (2015), Richard Backus (2017), Michael Purdon (2018).

The successful recipient will be a teacher who has a minimum of 2 years of teaching contribution and:

• Has a teaching style that is clear, relevant, concise, conceptually sound, positive, and humorous, accompanied by an attitude that reflects an enthusiasm and willingness to readily teach wherever able
• Promotes and advocates for best practices in teaching in medicine.
• Encourages and supports others in their efforts to teach family medicine both by mentoring, and by interpreting current knowledge about medical education and implementing best practices for teaching.
• Takes a scholarly approach to building new knowledge about teaching in medicine through assessment, reflection and /or research.

ROD ANDREW FACULTY AWARD – EXCELLENCE IN IMG EDUCATION

This is a program wide award to honour Dr. Rod Andrew’s contribution in IMG education. The recipient will have made an outstanding contribution to the field of medical education for IMG residents in the UBC Family Medicine Residency, including some or all of the following:

• Contributes to medical education through mentoring, recruiting and teaching clinical faculty and preceptors in the area of IMG education, and leads by example through excellence in teaching themselves.
• Interprets current knowledge by developing and implementing evidence-based approaches and excellence in IMG education, including best practices and innovations for teaching methods, curriculum development, and assessment strategies and support of residents.
• Promotes and advocates for effective teaching and research in IMG education in order to overcome barriers and build on current strengths, both locally/provincially and nationally.
• Builds new knowledge in a scholarly way through assessment, reflection and/or research in order to improve frameworks and guidelines for best practices in medical education for both residents and preceptors/teachers.

Each residency site is encouraged to offer the following award consisting of a framed certificate as well as public recognition during graduation or end of year celebrations at the individual site. Nomination and selection processes are determined at the individual site.

RESIDENCY SITE TEACHING AWARDS: Resident Selected (Organized by Chief Residents)

This award recognizes preceptors/teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching from the perspective of the residents. Two awards will be given for each residency training site with more than 15 residents, one award will be available for sites with less than 15 residents.

RESIDENCY SITE MEDICAL EDUCATION AWARDS: Peer Selected

This award recognizes faculty and is chosen by their peers for their work as clinical or academic teachers, scholarly faculty, leaders, mentors or coaches.

BCCFP AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Each year the BCCFP will honour and recognize BCCFP family physicians who have achieved excellence in one of the following categories:

• Community Family Physician
• Rural Family Physician
• Family Physician Teacher
• Family Physician Researcher
• CFPC Reg. L. Perkins Family Physician of the Year (All physician nominated in other categories will also be considered for this award. No separate application is necessary.)

In addition, up to three Awards of Exceptional Contribution will be presented to an individual or group, who does not have to hold BCCFP membership, who have made a noteworthy contribution to community health or in the discipline of Family Medicine.

Winners will be presented at the BCCFP Annual Scientific Assembly.

Nominations can be made by any Clinical Faculty, resident or students within the Faculty of Medicine that involves clinical teaching.

Nominators are required to complete all documentation and submit the completed nomination package (and 5 copies) to the awards committee no later than March 5, 2010.

CLINICAL FACULTY AWARD FOR CAREER EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL TEACHING

The Clinical Faculty Award for Career Excellence in Clinical Teaching is intended to recognize senior Clinical Faculty members who have demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching over the course of their career. The award consists of a certificate, an honorarium of $2500, and public recognition at the Faculty of Medicine Awards reception.

Judging Criteria (these must be addressed in the nomination letter/package)

• Candidates should have a sustained record over a minimum of 10 years of excellent teaching performance.
• Consideration will be given to those candidates who are seen as role models and presented as having inspired, influenced and motivated their students, residents and peers.
• Consideration will be given to those candidates presented as having had a major impact on the acquisition of clinical knowledge, skill and judgment.

CLINICAL FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN CLINICAL TEACHING

To recognize excellence in teaching by Clinical Faculty members.

Three awards are available. Each award consists of a certificate, an honorarium of $1000, and public recognition at the Faculty of Medicine Awards reception.

Judging Criteria: (these must be addressed in the nomination letter/package)

• Candidates should have a record over several years of excellent teaching performance.
• Consideration will be given to the development of effective teaching methods or materials for clinical teaching and to course development.
• The above criteria are broadly stated to allow the award to reflect the unique qualities that contribute to the excellence of different clinical teachers. Some excellent teachers provide a life-long inspiration to students and have a profound effect on their motivation to learn in particular areas or pursue a particular career. Some stimulate students’ clinical problem solving or critical appraisal skills, some are most influential in students’ acquisition of clinical knowledge and skills, and others employ highly innovative teaching methods.

CLINICAL FACULTY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY PRACTICE TEACHING

To recognize excellence in teaching by Clinical Faculty members in the setting of community practices, rural areas or expansion sites. This award is intended to recognize a Clinical Faculty member who has made a sustained educational impact in a local community and who demonstrates excellence in teaching.

The award consists of a certificate, an honorarium of $2000, and public recognition at the Faculty of Medicine Awards reception.

Judging Criteria: (these must be addressed in the nomination letter/package)

• Candidates should have a record of excellent teaching performance.
• Consideration will be given to candidates who employ an innovative and collaborative approach to teaching.
• Working conditions and general teaching environment will be taken into consideration.

The above criteria are broadly stated to allow the award to reflect the unique qualities and working situations that contribute to the excellence of different clinical teachers. Some excellent teachers provide a life-long inspiration to students and have a profound effect on their motivation to learn in particular areas or pursue a particular career. Some stimulate students’ clinical problem solving or critical appraisal skills, some are most influential in students’ acquisition of clinical knowledge and skills, and others employ highly innovative teaching methods. It is expected that most clinical teachers nominated for this award may not have contributed to course and teaching materials development.
